I was having a chat with a couple of old friends on facebook on the weekend and they both got to talking about “you need a girlfriend”. I actually said I didn’t NEED anything of the sort but trying to tell a woman she’s wrong is…well…lucky for me it wasn’t a face-to-face conversation…
I tried to explain that it wasn’t as easy as snapping my fingers and WHAMO…girlfriend. Well, maybe it is. I seem to remember it used to work for The Fonz so hang on…*SNAP* Nope. Nothing…
I also asked them just where I would meet nice girls in this day and age. Since I’m not into the local pub scene all that much anymore and being a small town I have no idea where else I would look. I mean…I really have no idea. Let’s see…the pub…or…the other pub…
Even if I DID start hitting the local pubs on the weekend again I would probably just end up talking about the footy with the boys and forgetting why I was there in the first place. I’m pretty easily distracted like that…
Besides, why would I want to spend much time drinking at the bars in town anymore now that I have my own? I actually used to live five minutes’ walk from one of the pubs for several years and spent most weekends there watching the footy and having a few drinks. In fact I spent so much time there I was more than a regular, I ended up spending a bit of time behind the bar helping out when it got busy!
But I’m older now and sitting around the pubs doesn’t hold the same attraction for me that it once did.
I gave the whole situation a lot of thought and the only thing I could come up with was that most of the people I know who have hooked up have been introduced to each other in one form or another through mutual friends. So I suggested that since they were so keen on me having a full-time bar wench that they should “man up” for a visit and bring a couple of their friends along for some fun out here.
What’s the worst that could happen? Could I maybe find a girl that I hit it off with? It’s a possibility. But it’s more likely that we just have a good time with some good company and make some new friends. Not a bad result really. And it would get these two off my back…
So I challenged them to make some time and swing by for a visit with a couple of friends. I understand that they both live out of town and have kids so it could be a bit hard to drop everything to come for a visit. But the challenge stands. If they are serious about this whole “girlfriend” thing then they should put their money where their mouth is, so to speak.
In fact if any of my friends who are reading this feel the same way (that I need a girlfriend) and have some single girlfriends then I also extend the challenge to you. Just leave the crazy ones out of it. Well…maybe a little crazy is ok. But just a little. And it has to be the good kind of crazy…
Besides, there are a few of you who have yet to visit and it would be a great excuse to catch up for some cocktail shenanigans. And again, what’s the worst that could happen? We make some new friends. It’s a win/win situation for everyone.
